ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Mike Willis—head of the South Texas Manufacturers Association—said tougher immigration policies have removed many workers, leaving agriculture, construction, trucking, food manufacturing and hospitality short-staffed. He delivered his monthly report at the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton in McAllen and noted industries may need to raise wages to fill open jobs. Rio Grande Guardian

- ➤ UTRGV will host a Celebration of Life for professor emeritus Gary Joe Mounce—who passed away last month after a two-year battle with cancer—at the UTRGV Ballroom on the Edinburg campus on Saturday, Jan. 24. Rio Grande Guardian
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Retired irrigation district manager Sonny Hinojosa spoke at a McAllen Citizens League panel at Rio Bank, stating that lining irrigation canals costs about $1 million per mile — his estimate. He added that state allocations and NADBank loans help fund projects, though funding remains subject to cyclical water issues. Rio Grande Guardian

- ➤ McAllen is offering over $1.5 million in federal CDBG and HOME grants (supporting affordable housing and community development) for organizations seeking to serve low and moderate-income residents. Interested groups must apply online by Feb. 6. KRGV
- ➤ North American Development Bank extended its water conservation proposal deadline to Feb. 10 in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, calling for projects that enhance efficiency in agriculture and municipal systems in Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr and Willacy counties — proposals will be evaluated for funding under the Water Resiliency Fund.
