- ➤ A Mercedes family escaped a house fire on the 1900 block of Fresno Street on Saturday after a bystander urged them to evacuate, but they lost three dogs as strong winds made the flames hard to control. KRGV
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ McAllen EDC announced 13 industrial projects that will create about 1,000 new jobs over the next six to 12 months across industrial parks. The agency said a careers fair on Feb. 17 at the Convention Center will host more than 200 employers and over 1,000 job seekers. Rio Grande Guardian
- ➤ A new Dallas Fed report shows that Mexican shoppers now favor local retailers over border shopping due to growing big-box retail in northern Mexico and longer wait times at crossings (a shift that may boost local businesses) even as Texas stores offer a wide selection and lower prices. - ➤ Weslaco Economic Development Corporation executive director Steve Valdez said occupancy at the Mid Valley International Industrial Park has hit 50 percent and his office is now searching for land to build a third industrial park, reporting the update today at the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel in McAllen.
