- ➤ Today, The Salvation Army shelter at 1600 N. 23rd St. offers warm meals, blankets, and over 50 beds to help locals stay warm during near-freezing temperatures. After distributing more than 735 coats, it seeks additional donations as supplies run low (100 blankets and 20 jackets remain). KRGV
- ➤ Local veteran Ruben Perez launched the region's first Navy Week with over 70 sailors taking part in flyovers, community service and the Texas Citrus Fiesta Parade in Mission. The event began Monday, Jan. 26 and will end Saturday, Jan. 31 — a new tradition for the Valley. KRGV
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A fast-moving fire destroyed four mobile homes and spread to three others early Monday on North Closner Boulevard in Edinburg, displacing six people who are receiving temporary shelter help from fire crews and the Red Cross — no injuries were reported. KRGV

- ➤ San Juan chef George Watts III of GW's Barbecue has been named one of 20 semifinalists for the James Beard Award, making him the only Rio Grande Valley representative as he celebrates his restaurant's fifth anniversary; award finalists will be announced this spring. KRGV
