Good morning, McAllen. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 17th of March.
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Juan Carlos Contreras (21) was arrested on DWI and intoxication assault charges after a rollover crash early Sunday at about 3:12 a.m. on the 1800 block of North Sugar Road in Edinburg that ejected a 22-year-old passenger with non-life-threatening injuries, and he will face charges once he is released from the hospital as police investigate possible street racing and a second vehicle's involvement. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Hidalgo County Commissioner David Fuentes told the Texas Senate Committee that the Delta Region Water Management Project will capture daily runoff and treat it into drinking water for nearly 250,000 people. He warned that red tape is delaying state funding for the first project of its kind that could add over 12,000 acre-feet of water each year — and help control floods. Rio Grande Guardian
- ➤ A Rio Grande Valley farmer representing the Texas Farm Bureau testified before the Texas Senate Committee on Water, Agriculture and Rural Affairs on March 10, 2025 and said that relying on Mexico for water supplies is a risky strategy. He explained that Mexico is more than 1 million acre feet behind on its 1944 Water Treaty obligations, which threatens local agriculture and the regional economy. Rio Grande Guardian
- ➤ The Dragados-Pulice Joint Venture announced road closures for the Pharr Interchange Project, with a full closure of the westbound I-2 frontage road between Jackson Road and Jackson Avenue that began on March 16th at 8 p.m. and will remain until March 30th — with daytime ramp closures from March 17th to March 30th — to create a safe work zone for railing and concrete work.
