COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On March 20, the Friends of Quinta Mazatlán planted their sixth Tiny Forest at the McAllen Public Library with H—E—B sponsorship investing over $35,000 to improve the local environment for residents and wildlife. The group expects the urban forest to mature in 20 to 30 years—a much faster pace than natural forests.  ValleyCentral.com

CRIME NEWS

  • McAllen police arrested Roberto Ramirez Gutierrez and Rosbel De La Fuente Hernandez for running an illegal gambling operation on the 600 block of South 23rd Street—confiscating cash and eight-liner gaming machines—and set their bonds at $9,000.  Fox Rio Grande Valley
  • McAllen Police identified the victim of Wednesday's fatal auto-pedestrian accident as Christian Joana Climaco, 33, from Alamo — who exited a moving vehicle — and arrested Marilyn Hernandez Magallanes for driving while intoxicated and filing a false report around 5:20 a.m. on State Highway 107; she remains in custody pending arraignment as the investigation continues.  ValleyCentral.com
  • Federal agencies led by ICE raided two warehouses at Leo's Clothing in Hidalgo earlier today and detained multiple individuals—officials provided no further details about the operation.  Fox Rio Grande Valley
  • McAllen police arrested 33-year-old Marilyn Hernandez Magallanes on charges of driving while intoxicated and failing to report a fatal auto-pedestrian crash that struck 33-year-old Christian Joana Climaco on Thursday at around 5:20 a.m. on State Highway 107—she is now pending arraignment as the investigation continues.  KRGV

  • Texas A&M International Alumni Association received $250,000 from RSTEF for its Banking Academy Endowment at the 2025 Awards Ceremony held at the Radisson Hotel McAllen Airport—supporting local efforts to boost vocational certifications and degrees. The grant is expected to help expand programs that improve skilled employment for area residents.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • At a recent Awards Ceremony at the Radisson Hotel McAllen Airport, Texas State Technical College got a $250,000 grant for its RSTEF Endowed Scholarship Fund. The grant will help local students earn trade certificates and degrees.  Rio Grande Guardian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Brian Jones, a Rio Grande Valley farmer and Texas Farm Bureau board member, joined a private meeting on March 19 at a farm south of San Juan with U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz—U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz—and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins to discuss the water crisis and a 1944 water-sharing treaty with Mexico; he later shared his reaction in a video interview with the Rio Grande Guardian.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Pete Sepulveda from the Cameron County RMA said at a recent meeting that two new pedestrian bridges will be built at the Gateway to ease vehicle and pedestrian conflicts—around 500 students from Matamoros and school buses are often caught in these conflicts. He said the project is part of the Riverfront development in downtown Brownsville and will move forward after positive talks with federal officials to meet updated Customs & Border Protection requirements.  Rio Grande Guardian
