EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Carlos Margo, dean of South Texas College's Center for Advanced Training & Apprenticeships, gave a talk at a luncheon held at the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton in McAllen. He explained that his department now serves all of South Texas and even trains people in Mexico with custom-designed programs. Rio Grande Guardian
- ➤ Stephen F. Austin Elementary School in Edinburg will receive a Texas historical marker on May 14 to honor its 100-year legacy as a segregated school for Mexican and Mexican-American students; the marker will help preserve a proud history uncovered through dedicated research. KRGV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Residents in a Peñitas neighborhood have called for repairs on Volcano Road following 30 years of neglect that has created safety issues for elderly drivers. City crews leveled the road near Mile 3 north of I-2 and began construction a week ago, but officials have not provided a repair timeline. KRGV
- ➤ Agua SUD in western Hidalgo County is planning to begin construction in 2028 on a fourth water treatment plant to keep up with growing demand in the Peñitas and Palmview areas. The project received $37 million in state funding but customers worry water rates may rise. KRGV
- ➤ On Thursday, the Texas Water Foundation met with regional leaders in Brownsville to discuss state & federal funding programs that will support upgrades to water infrastructure amid long-term shortages. KRGV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Methodist Healthcare Ministries will invest $237.5 million this year (an 11% increase from last year) to boost health equity across 74 counties by supporting nearly 195 nonprofits, direct health services, and strategic community initiatives. Rio Grande Guardian
