- ➤ A cancer patient resource fair will be held on April 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Valley Grande Institute for Academic Studies, 345 S Texas Blvd in Weslaco for cancer patients, survivors & caregivers. Welcome Home RGV
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Texas Association of Museums is holding its largest-ever museum conference in McAllen from April 19 through April 22. This event (the first in 43 years) will offer local institutions new resources for unique experiences statewide. KRGV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ PSJA ISD is set to send its first elementary students to the state Spanish spelling bee in June. Fourth grader Beleny Rodríguez and fifth grader Mateo Salinas, part of the dual language program (which builds bilingual skills and cultural pride), train daily to prepare for the competition. KRGV
- ➤ McAllen ISD seeks voter approval for a $335 million bond to upgrade all 31 campuses by replacing roofs, air conditioners, and portable classrooms while adding new classroom wings — the district held its first meeting on Monday at Thigpen Zavala Elementary and voters decide in May with voting starting April 20. - ➤ Valley residents are filing their taxes ahead of the April 15 deadline with busy local tax services helping many meet the cutoff. Experts advise filing early or requesting an extension to avoid penalties and protect personal information from scammers. KRGV
- ➤ On Saturday, immigration authorities detained Venezuelan doctor Rubeliz Bolivar at McAllen International Airport after finding she had overstayed her visa despite a valid work permit while she headed to a court hearing on her pending asylum claim (her daughter accompanied her), following a similar recent case. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ South Texas fire departments, including crews in McAllen, are urged to join the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer as they face rising risks from toxic exposure. More than 1,900 Texans have registered by Apr. 10 to help improve data and safety protections for firefighters. Rio Grande Guardian
- ➤ South Texas Health System’s Dr. Navpreet Dhillon explains diabetes now affecting one in three in the Valley, and Channel 5 News will air a video in April on prevention and treatment + H-E-B and the hospital are offering free screenings this month. KRGV
