ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Texas DPS is investigating a fatal multi-vehicle crash on US-281 and FM-1017 north of Edinburg, and a spokesperson said all southbound lanes have reopened after being closed.  ValleyCentral.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Mayra Garcia testified Monday in the trial of Jesse Edward Leatherwood, who is accused of killing deputy constable Ruben Garcia when his patrol unit was hit on Sept. 30, 2024, and the trial resumes today—jurors reviewed video showing his final moments as a partner said he tried to help him.  KRGV
  • McAllen police responded at around 3:19 p.m. on Sunday to a shooting at the 2200 block of South 26th St where one person was hospitalized—police say the suspect remains at large.  KRGV

HEALTH NEWS

  • South Texas Health System McAllen announced that fifth grader Sunnie Bennett from IDEA Los Encinos Academy won the contest to name its new da Vinci 5 Robotic Surgical System with her entry ChRIS (Comprehensive Robotic Intelligence System), chosen from over 100 entries. The hospital celebrated her win at a ceremony on April 10 and gave all four finalists special tokens and a chance to see the new robot.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Channel 5 News, Noticias RGV and Take 5 will educate viewers on diabetes prevention and treatment in April by airing bilingual news coverage and public service announcements + free diabetes screenings are provided by HEB and South Texas Health Systems. South Texas Health Systems bariatric surgeon Dr. Luis Reyes discussed the risks of type 2 diabetes in today’s segment + additional awareness content will air throughout the month.  KRGV
