ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A father and his 4-year-old son died today when a wrong-way Chevy Malibu triggered a four-vehicle chain-reaction crash on Highway 281 near Edinburg—officials said the white Freightliner struck the pair, and a mother with her child was injured and remains hospitalized in stable condition.  Fox Rio Grande Valley
  • The funeral of Border Patrol agent Alejandro De Luna, who was killed in a car crash on April 8, took place on Tuesday at a church in Mission and he was laid to rest at 2 p.m. at the Rio Grande Valley Veterans State Cemetery while police investigate the crash and two others were hospitalized with injuries.  KRGV

CRIME NEWS

  • On Sunday afternoon, McAllen police responded to a shooting near the 2200 block of South 26th Street where one person was injured and taken to a hospital— the suspect remains at large.  Fox Rio Grande Valley
  • A man fleeing South Padre Island police jumped over the Queen Isabella Causeway railing into the bay—CBP Air and Marine rescued him and the Coast Guard treated him for minor injuries before police took him into custody.  Fox Rio Grande Valley

CULTURE NEWS

  • During Holy Week, parishioners will attend Easter mass at San Juan Basilica where live mariachi music fills the space — a tradition that began in 1985 and shapes the service. Father Jorge Gomez, from Jalisco, and founding member Francisco Morales say the music connects worship with local culture.  KRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two Valley students were honored in a statewide art contest hosted by Texas Parks and Wildlife. Alyssa Trevino of Pharr won the Special Species Award for her Guadalupe Bass artwork and Camila Vasquez of McAllen received an honorable mention among 485 entries for students in grades 7 to 9—Trevino's artwork will be showcased at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens.  ValleyCentral.com

  • South Texas Health System welcomes board-certified urology specialist Dr. Phillip Kim, who will provide care for urinary and male reproductive conditions through his practice Rhize Urology at the STHS Medical Office Building next door to STHS Edinburg—he aims to improve urological health in the Rio Grande Valley.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • South Texas Health System Children's is hosting a free online seminar today from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Facebook to teach families about autism signs, early help, and local support—aiming to clear up common mistakes about the condition.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • HEB Dietitian Joann Breaux explained healthy foods and quick meal ideas that can be made in under five minutes to help fight diabetes. HEB and South Texas Health Systems are offering free glucose screenings for locals to check their blood sugar levels.  KRGV
