ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A 69-year-old motorcyclist riding a Harley-Davidson was seriously injured in a collision with a Chevy Silverado (near North Conway Road and State Highway 107) in McAllen and was taken to a local hospital (police continue to investigate the cause). Fox Rio Grande Valley
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A man was charged after he allegedly assaulted his 86-year-old father during a Tuesday welfare check in rural San Carlos—he fled before deputies arrived and later confessed during arraignment—bond is set at $500,000. KRGV
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ McAllen High School senior Trip Shirah won the best male actor award at the Joci Awards in San Antonio on April 13 and will travel to New York City on June 13 for performance workshops leading to the Jimmy Awards on June 23. He said he hopes his role as Frank Abagnale Jr. in the musical 'Catch Me If You Can' will show others that big dreams are possible. KRGV

- ➤ Dr. Matthew Atterberry works as an employment readiness instructor at VAIL and was diagnosed with autism (at age 48 in 2022) after facing challenges from an early intellectual disability. He earned his doctorate from UTRGV and now uses his journey to inspire others to reach their full potential. KRGV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City officials announced that Assistant City Manager Joe Vera died early Wednesday morning. He had served since 2014 by managing key city departments—Convention Center Facilities, Public Library, Palm View Golf Course and Parks and Recreation—and is remembered as a visionary leader. KRGV
- ➤ House Bill 4572 would require oil and gas drillers to notify landowners before burying toxic waste and set stricter rules for reserve pits to protect groundwater and property—testimony was heard at the House Energy Resources Committee as both supporters and opponents raised concerns and the bill now awaits further legislative action. The Texas Tribune
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ STHS McAllen launched its new robotic surgery program on April 17th with the da Vinci 5 Robotic Surgical System to improve patient outcomes + reduce recovery times. The ceremony featured hospital leaders + an 11-year-old contest winner who named the system ChRIS, and surgeons reported positive results from the first 25 procedures. Rio Grande Guardian
