  • Nearly four weeks after the March 26 storm, residents in La Feria’s Green Bay South mobile home park still see flood debris piled along their curbs — they said the county began cleanup on April 3 but has not set a timeline to remove the trash posing health risks.  ValleyCentral.com

  • On Wednesday, a special mass for Pope Francis was held at the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan Del Valle as parishioners filled the pews and hung a black bow on the doorway—marking a nine-day mourning after his death on Monday.   • A four-vehicle crash near N. Veterans Blvd. and E. Sioux Rd. left a San Juan police officer and several others hospitalized at 3:15 p.m. yesterday + crews cleared debris and the Pharr Police continued investigating + drivers were advised to avoid the area.  ValleyCentral.com

CRIME NEWS

  • A suspect accused of assaulting a woman and stealing her vehicle remains at large after a police chase ended in a four-vehicle crash that hospitalized seven people on Wednesday — officers said the chase began when they responded to an incident at a McDonald's parking lot on N. Raul Longoria Road — and no major injuries were reported.  KRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • RGV College in partnership with DHR Health will honor 12 Registered Nurse Apprenticeship students at a graduation ceremony held at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance on May 1 from 10:00 a.m. to noon—approved by the Texas Board of Nursing, the program combines paid clinical training with academic study to help ease the regional nursing shortage.  Rio Grande Guardian

HEALTH NEWS

  • Early Saturday mornings, members of the 956 Ruck Tribe gather in the Upper Rio Grande Valley to ruck with weighted vests as a way to boost fitness and manage diabetes risks. Tony Martinez, a 34-year-old who began rucking in October 2024 after family diabetes concerns, leads the group—local health officials say the activity raises heart rates and can help control blood sugar levels.  KRGV
  • STHS Behavioral unveiled its new Lü Interactive Playground (an interactive gaming wall that helps boost physical and mental health) on April 23 at a special ceremony; funds donated by the Auxiliary (its nonprofit arm) helped cover the cost.
