- ➤ A 5K run and walk will honor Texas trooper Eduardo Chavez 20 years after his death this Saturday at the Mission Event Center to support a scholarship fund for graduating seniors + registration is open online until 6 a.m. with the run starting at 7 a.m. KRGV

- ➤ A fire early Sunday on Datil Avenue spread from a neighboring home, severely damaging the long-time residence and leaving the family (which includes a disabled member) to rely on community and Red Cross support as they sort through debris. KRGV
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ McAllen City Manager Isaac Tawil announced a groundbreaking for a Medical Research & Education Center, a joint effort by DHR Health & University of Houston that is expected to create up to 200 jobs and boost local economic growth while expanding high-quality care and research opportunities. - ➤ PSJA Southwest theater program advanced to the UIL 5A contest and will compete in Austin next month — the troupe hopes to win its second title in five years while joining Rio Grande Valley schools Harlingen South and Harlingen High. KRGV

- ➤ CHANNEL 5 NEWS featured diabetes prevention and treatment on Apr. 29, with free screenings offered by H-E-B and South Texas Health System throughout April. Sponsored by Prime Health, a local doctor answered community diabetes questions (providing guidance for managing the condition). KRGV
