  • Make-A-Wish Rio Grande Valley marked World Wish Month by highlighting its mission to grant wishes to critically ill children aged 2 1/2 to 18. The organization, which has granted 1,700 wishes since 1997 across nearby counties, will host Mornings with Make-A-Wish at Holiday Inn Resort, South Padre Island on August 8 (an event to raise funds and community awareness).  ValleyCentral.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Hidalgo County Precinct 3 Commissioner Everardo Villarreal is offering a $500 reward for information leading to an arrest in connection with vandalism at the Community Resource Center and Hidalgo County Health Clinic at 1901 North Los Ebanos Road in Mission — officials say the under-construction building now bears vulgar graffiti that damages a key community project.  KRGV
  • Today in Brownsville, federal court heard Maxwell and Zachary Jensen plead not guilty to charges for a crude oil smuggling scheme at Arroyo Terminal; Maxwell was denied bond for high flight risk reasons & Zachary was released on a $100,000 bond with strict conditions to surrender his passport and remain in Utah.  Fox Rio Grande Valley

ECONOMY NEWS

  • McAllen Economic Development Corporation is teaming with the Chamber of Commerce and the City to host the MXLAN International Economic Summit at the McAllen Convention Center on May 9 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tickets cost $60 and the event will let business leaders, educators and government officials talk about AI, new tech and ways to grow the local economy.  Rio Grande Guardian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mercedes ISD is asking parents to give feedback on a plan to consolidate campuses due to a drop in student enrollment. The district will host info sessions on May 5 and May 6 and a school board vote is set for May 20—if approved, students and staff at schools like Zachary Taylor Elementary will be moved while continued employment is offered to all affected workers.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mission Fire Department transitioned to a dual fire and EMS system a year ago and now says burnout issues are resolved—after hiring nine new workers with three more expected, the new schedule offers staff more rest. This change comes as the department improves its rotation system to assure better coverage and relieve fatigue.  KRGV

HEALTH NEWS

  • STHS McAllen and STHS Edinburg were redesignated as Texas Ten Step facilities by Texas Health and Human Services—confirming they follow evidence-based practices that support breastfeeding mothers and promote quality care.  Rio Grande Guardian
