COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Veterinary students from Texas Tech University helped spay and neuter adoptable pets at Palm Valley Animal Society in Edinburg until Friday. The program offered them hands-on training and helped control the pet population in the Rio Grande Valley as they completed more than 120 procedures.  KRGV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A black SUV crashed into a fence and building near Second and Hackberry at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and emergency crews responded quickly while police began investigating—no injuries have been reported and traffic has since returned to normal.  Fox Rio Grande Valley

CRIME NEWS

  • A motorcycle collided with a red SUV at 12:20 p.m. on May 2 at the 8000 block of N. 10th St—police said the motorcyclist sustained non-life-threatening injuries, was taken to a local hospital, and the case remains under investigation.  ValleyCentral.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Darcia Cuellar has been named founding superintendent of the PossAble Dream Adult High School that will open its Pharr campus this fall to serve adults aged 18 to 50 while campuses in Brownsville and Laredo will be developed with local colleges—the school plans to enroll 900 students in its first year and expand to 2,000 over five years.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Dr. Daniel P. King launched The PossAble Dream Foundation to build a tuition-free adult charter high school system in the region, with the first campus housed in the old Pharr Events Center (North Cage near I-69C) and supported by a $1 million donation from Pharr. The school will help adults up to 50 earn a high school diploma, gain industry certifications, and access essential support services (city investment) to improve workforce skills in Deep South Texas.  Rio Grande Guardian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sheriff Manuel Trevino has served more than 100 days and increased patrols in Cameron County to help residents feel safer—he also worked with a local college to start a jail academy and completed a state security review of the courthouse. He is now working with federal partners to reopen inmate housing and recruit more jail staff.  KRGV

HEALTH NEWS

  • South Texas Health System will host a Celebration of Strength — Hope luncheon on Monday, May 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Casa De Palmas' Royal Palm Ballroom in McAllen to honor breast cancer survivors and promote early detection, ensuring the community learns valuable screening information.  Rio Grande Guardian
