  • Jason Arms, a STEM education advocate with over a decade of experience in the Rio Grande Valley, said that the planned vote to incorporate Starbase as a city will help bring long-overdue investment and job opportunities to our community — nearly 300 registered SpaceX employees will cast their votes on the proposal.  Rio Grande Guardian

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A multi-vehicle collision between a motorcycle and a red SUV occurred around noon near the 8000 block of North 10th Street in McAllen, leaving the motorcyclist with minor injuries and taken to a nearby hospital — police are investigating the cause of the accident.  Fox Rio Grande Valley

CRIME NEWS

  • Hidalgo County deputies are searching for a Hispanic man seen in a red Ford Mustang with a black bumper who fled a shooting at a residence on the 3000 block of W. Mile 5 in rural Weslaco on May 3 at 1:46 a.m.—a 22-year-old party guest was shot near his vehicle and is in critical condition.  ValleyCentral.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Progreso voters elected three new school board trustees on Saturday—retired counselor Juanita “Janie” Sarmiento defeated incumbent Robert Garcia while local businessman Agapito Perez Jr. and retired counselor Paola Daylee Candanoza also won their races.  ValleyCentral.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In western Hidalgo County, voters cast early ballots for a tax increase to fund fire and ambulance services and early returns show 537 votes opposed and 204 in favor — a measure that would make only Precinct 3 residents pay for the service, replacing a $70,000 private contract. If approved, the tax increase will shift full financial responsibility to local taxpayers.  KRGV
