CRIME NEWS

  • A fatal crash in McAllen killed Juan Gallegos Pérez and John Carlo Gorri Abusto and injured another person, and police suspect intoxication—investigators are reviewing evidence and toxicology tests.  Fox Rio Grande Valley
  • On Sunday night, a woman walking southbound on Mile 4 in Weslaco was fatally struck by a dark-colored vehicle that fled the scene while Texas DPS investigates the incident and urges locals to share any details they may have observed.  Fox Rio Grande Valley
  • Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal shooting in Donna where Miriam Valdez is accused of accidentally discharging a firearm during a game with her boyfriend, and investigators are processing evidence and asking community members for tips & her family maintains that the act was unintentional.  Fox Rio Grande Valley
  • Edinburg North High School went on lockdown Monday after reports of a weapon on campus + officers from Edinburg CISD began investigating the threat.  KRGV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Edinburg EDC launched the Bank on INT! paid internship program for nine UTRGV undergraduates to gain 200 hours of hands-on banking experience with local institutions — Freedom Bank, Rio Bank, Texas National Bank, Lone Star National Bank, and Greater State Bank — as part of a ten-week summer program starting June 9. The program offers mentoring and school credit to help keep top local talent here.  Rio Grande Guardian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Roma High student Nicolas Lopez discovered his passion for media when he was mistakenly enrolled in a video production class (a scheduling error) and quickly became a leader at the Gladiator Television Network. He now directs projects and creates original film scores (showcasing his talent) that boost the student media program.  Fox Rio Grande Valley

  • Texas state Sen. Judith Zaffirini cast her 75,000th consecutive vote on May 15, setting a state and national record, and her McAllen colleague Sen. Juan Hinojosa said he is proud to work with her + Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick presented her with an inscribed gavel to mark the milestone.  Rio Grande Guardian
