Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 25th of May.
Good morning, McAllen.
🚨 Crime
Texas DPS located a black Chevrolet Impala—the vehicle believed to be involved in a fatal hit-and-run on Mile 4 West Road north of Mile 12 1/2 Road North in Weslaco on May 18, where 27-year-old Cassandra I.
Hernandez was struck and killed when the driver fled.
🏛️ Government
The Texas House approved Senate Bill 10 by an 88-49 vote Saturday that requires every public school classroom — including those in McAllen — to display a Ten Commandments poster at least 16 by 20 inches, and a final vote could occur today before Gov. Abbott signs it.
Supporters say the measure will highlight Christianity's role in history — a vision of traditional values — while critics say it violates the separation of church and state.
Last Friday, the Texas Senate approved an amendment that gives Starbase the power to close Boca Chica Beach during SpaceX rocket launches, and local environmental groups worry that this will limit public access.
The House will vote on the measure soon—if it passes, Starbase will gain full authority over beach closures.
