ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A diesel spill near the 3200 block of South Ware Road contributed to the crash that killed U.S. Border Patrol Agent Alejandro De Luna on April 8 in McAllen—his vehicle lost control, struck another vehicle and rolled onto the grass, injuring two others.  KRGV

CRIME NEWS

  • On May 17, an intoxicated driver killed 53-year-old Juan Carlos Perez and 20-year-old Giancarlo Humberto Coria Bustos in a McAllen crash, and the mother of one victim is suing two bars—Santa Diabla and NY 17th Floor—for allegedly overserving Dionicio Luna Aguirre, who was charged with intoxication manslaughter as the incident spurred local protests and the lawsuit seeks $1,000,000 in damages.  ValleyCentral.com
  • Julian Alberto Soto was sentenced to nearly four years in prison for a human smuggling operation that spanned 17 years across the Rio Grande Valley, and he was arrested in January after a high-speed chase ended when he drove his vehicle off an embankment in Roma.  ValleyCentral.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Memorial Day, the Museum of South Texas History honored Sgt. Freddy Gonzalez, a Rio Grande Valley Medal of Honor recipient who died in the Vietnam War after he returned to Vietnam for his fellow Marines during the TET offensive. The exhibit displayed archives, letters, and recordings that detailed his bravery, and May 25 would have marked his 79th birthday—underscoring his enduring legacy in the region.  KRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hidalgo ISD named J.A. Gonzalez as its lone finalist for superintendent and he is under a required 21-day waiting period. The experienced educator worked in public schools for 28 years, led Harlingen Consolidated ISD, and was honored as Texas Superintendent of the Year in 2020.  ValleyCentral.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • FEMA has opened four disaster recovery centers to help residents recover from the March floods, with facilities located at Harlingen Convention Center, Economic Development Corporation of Weslaco, Sebastian Community Center, and Starr County Courthouse Annex. The centers will serve residents today from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. plus remain open every day to help with receipts and photos of flood damage.  ValleyCentral.com
  • FEMA opened four disaster relief centers in Harlingen, Weslaco, Rio Grande City, and Sebastian Tuesday for storm victims who suffered damage in March storms. The centers are open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and applicants must bring proper documentation (photos, receipts, and IDs) to support their claims.  KRGV
