COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On May 28th, nearly 4,000 customers lost power across the Rio Grande Valley with outages reported in Hidalgo, Cameron, Starr, and Willacy counties. The City of McAllen said its Traffic Operations Department also lost power at several key intersections—impacts that may affect local travel.  ValleyCentral.com

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 20-year-old Lasara man, identified as Erik Daniel Perez II, died Tuesday night when his 2023 Chevrolet Corvette veered off 6th Street west of FM 1015 and struck a utility pole + speeding was believed to be a factor, authorities said.  ValleyCentral.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Dionicio Luna Aguirre, accused of killing 54-year-old Juan Carlos Perez and 20-year-old Gianncarlo Humberto Corria Bustos in a crash after leaving a bar, tested positive for cocaine, THC & amphetamines when he was taken to a hospital on May 28 for evaluation.  ValleyCentral.com

  • UT-Rio Grande Valley professor Mostafa Malki urged regional economic leaders to boost manufacturing over retail during a panel discussion at RGV StartUp Week—he explained that manufacturing keeps profits in the area and builds long-term wealth.  Rio Grande Guardian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Texas Legislature passed House Bill 6 to allow schools to use longer in-school suspensions and out-of-school suspensions for repeated disruptions — the bill now goes to the governor for approval. The law will let principals review suspensions every 10 days and treat a first vaping offense with a lighter punishment, reversing past limits.  The Texas Tribune
  • McAllen city leaders are planning renovations at the Hidalgo Port of Entry to update facilities that have not been improved in nearly 20 years—using toll revenue, they will renovate the administration building, update restrooms, expand a maintenance building, and repurpose a restroom into storage. Officials approved the plan in a recent meeting and will negotiate costs before work begins.  KRGV

HEALTH NEWS

  • McAllen fire chief Juan Gloria advised residents to stay safe while enjoying pools and beaches this summer as many head outdoors to beat the heat. He noted that water safety is vital after CDC data showed over 4,500 drownings in 2024 and a one-year-old drowned in a backyard pool in Hidalgo County this year.  KRGV
