  • An early morning fire in San Juan left an uninsured elderly woman hospitalized and investigators are examining whether a cigarette or faulty wiring sparked the blaze — local officials urge residents to check their fire safety measures.  Fox Rio Grande Valley

CRIME NEWS

  • Hidalgo County deputies in Donna arrested three men after a foot chase during a traffic stop on a truck towing another vehicle—two of the suspects, Jesus Casillas and Reyes Rodriguez, were already wanted on organized crime charges and now face additional charges for evading arrest.  Fox Rio Grande Valley

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Texas Legislature approved a bill on May 29th that provides public schools an $8.5 billion boost for teacher pay, special education and operational costs—Governor Greg Abbott plans to sign it soon.  The Texas Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Texas Department of Transportation advised residents to plan evacuation routes for hurricane season, noting coastal areas will leave first and the main routes are I-2 west and I-69C north. TxDOT spokesman Ray Pedraza said contraflow may be activated if local officials issue mandatory orders—reminding families to share their evacuation plans.  KRGV
