CRIME NEWS

  • Michael Luera, a McAllen man, pleaded guilty to possessing meth with intent to distribute after a Dec. 12, 2024 traffic stop that uncovered 2.2 grams of meth, several bags of U.S. currency, and a loaded firearm—he faces a life sentence and a possible $10 million fine with his sentencing set for Aug. 14 while remaining in custody.  ValleyCentral.com

  • A bill expected to bring $8.5 billion to public education may become law if Governor Greg Abbott signs it by June 22nd, but school districts in the Rio Grande Valley say the extra $55 per-student funding will not cover day-to-day needs such as new A/C units and roof repairs—officials noted spending limits.  ValleyCentral.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Texas College and the city of Weslaco have partnered to offer a 64-hour heavy equipment operator course for city employees that focuses on safe handling of bulldozers, motor graders, and excavators—adding OSHA 10 Construction and Forklift training to the program.   • A Mission realtor, Mario Alberto Rodriguez, 44, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud by selling proposed townhomes without filing warranty deeds—this fraud scheme defrauded homebuyers and short-term lenders of more than $770K and his sentencing will be on August 12.  ValleyCentral.com
