CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities reported an aggravated robbery at an Edinburg smoke shop last Friday when a masked suspect fled in a new model Chevy sedan—residents are urged to report any sightings to help the investigation.  Fox Rio Grande Valley
  • A man was charged with intoxication assault after his truck collided with a motorcycle at the Dove Avenue and North Ware Road intersection on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.—the motorcycle was driven by a 34-year-old firefighter who was treated at the scene and later hospitalized while Paul Cooper Garza, 53, is held in Hidalgo County jail with a $35,000 bond as officers investigate the crash.  KRGV
  • Manuel Garcia, 40, died after being shot on Friday at the 700 Block of North Erica St in Pharr and police charged Fernando Sandoval with his killing — his bond is set over $2 million.  KRGV

  • UT-Rio Grande Valley President Guy Bailey spoke at the Classroom to Commerce forum hosted by the Institute for Leadership in Capital Projects at the Embassy Suites by Hilton McAllen Convention Center—ERO Architects sponsored the event that examined how education drives economic growth in the Rio Grande Valley.  Rio Grande Guardian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A multi-million-dollar project is underway to upgrade U.S. 281 between Edinburg and San Manuel—adding new lanes and frontage roads along a seven-mile stretch. TxDOT said the $165 million upgrade will convert the highway from a four-lane divider to an interstate-level road and take three years to complete.  ValleyCentral.com
