CRIME NEWS

  • Carlos Martinez, a man from Mission, pleaded guilty for extorting $9.5 million from transmigrante companies near Los Indios and was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison—he must also pay a $2 million fine.  KRGV
  • Border Patrol officers found three bodies on private property near the Starr and Hidalgo County line — the Starr County Sheriff’s Department and Texas Rangers are investigating the case to learn the victims’ identities and whether foul play is suspected.  Fox Rio Grande Valley
  • An Alamo man pleaded guilty to capital murder and attempted murder and was sentenced to life in prison without parole after fatally stabbing two people at Motel 6 in McAllen on March 18, 2023—he had been in custody since the incident.  KRGV
  • Weslaco police are asking residents for help identifying a suspect in an aggravated robbery — while Roman Herrera, who led a high-speed chase near Westgate Drive and Sugar Cane Drive after stealing a red Ford Fusion, was arrested on the weekend and now faces felony charges.  Fox Rio Grande Valley

  • Grupo Frontera announced that its new single and music video, titled 'Y Lo Que Viene'—shot at the Alamo Pulga, will premiere today. The release features MISTER CHIVO and comes after the band invited local support on May 29.  ValleyCentral.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • McAllen Municipal Court has opened applications for the Teen Court Program that will allow teen volunteers to serve as attorneys and jurors to help dismiss Class C misdemeanor citations when they complete required community service. Eligible teens (14 and older) will attend Teen Law School trainings (in December) to learn advocacy skills and program rules.  KRGV
  • TxDOT is holding public meetings in Hidalgo County to get input on a plan to widen FM 1015 from Mile 12 Road in Mercedes to State Highway 107 in Edcouch. An in-person meeting is scheduled for today at 5 p.m. at Santiago Garcia Elementary School Cafeteria on 101 E. Santa Rosa Ave (virtual sessions run until June 27).  ValleyCentral.com

  • South Texas Health System is hosting a free online seminar—'Let’s Talk Your Health: Migraines'—to help local residents learn the causes, symptoms and triggers of migraine attacks. The webinar will stream live Tuesday, June 17, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on its Facebook page.  Rio Grande Guardian
