GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos said long wait times from vehicle checks at the Hidalgo (and Anzalduas) bridges are cutting down crossings and will hurt the city's budget as sales tax income may drop. Chamber of Commerce data shows that crossings were down about 28% in April (from last year), and slow checks sometimes take up to three hours.  Rio Grande Guardian

HEALTH NEWS

  • Moises Arjona Jr. of Unidos Contra la Diabetes said recent ICE raids made community members avoid health fairs, with the March 26 event drawing only about 100 people instead of 300. He warned that fears over immigration enforcement led to more phone consultations and longer prescription requests, which could increase emergency room costs.  Rio Grande Guardian
