ECONOMY NEWS

  • The job fair will be held on Saturday from 10 AM to 1 PM at the McAllen Public Library on 23rd Street, offering job seekers a chance to meet over 40 employers including Walmart, AARP, and the city of McAllen. Participants are encouraged to dress professionally and bring copies of their resume — as on spot interviews may lead to immediate job opportunities.  Fox Rio Grande Valley
  • Downtown McAllen businesses have seen fewer visitors after recent ICE raids across the Rio Grande Valley. Business owners reported employee absences due to deportation fears + the RGV Hispanic Chamber of Commerce urged state and federal officials to address the economic impact.  KRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The McAllen Public Library was one of over 70 Texas libraries to receive a $7,200 grant from the Texas Library Association to support its Summer Reading Challenge running through July 13 at three library locations. The grant funds will help offer reading programs and events for children and teens all summer.  ValleyCentral.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Texas Lyceum director Lizzy de la Garza Putegnat said there is still time to sponsor the upcoming three-day conference Beyond Borders, Immigration and the Texas Economy, which will be held in Mexico City from July 9-11. Local partners from the Rio Grande Valley including Titan Fuel, UT-Rio Grande Valley, the Council for South Texas Economic Progress, Mission EDC, Harlingen EDC and Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation already support the event to address immigration and economic issues in Texas.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Starting tomorrow night, TxDOT will pave 10th Street from 8 PM to 6 AM (to reduce daytime traffic) and work on Trenton Road and Interstate 2 (for safer roads) with the project set to finish by the end of October. Drivers should slow down and follow signs to stay safe in these work zones.  Fox Rio Grande Valley

SPORTS NEWS

  • The 23rd annual Amateur Golf Tournament kicked off Tuesday morning at Champion Lakes Golf Course as Frost Bank and the McAllen Parks and Recreation Department sponsored the event. The tournament, which has grown over the years to award 20 scholarships, drew golfers from San Antonio, Dallas, Oklahoma, and Mexico.  ValleyCentral.com
