  • Ford Sasser was honored at the 2025 Futuro RGV Awards Ceremony held today at the historic Casa de Palmas Hotel—he received the Community Leader Award for his service in banking and civic work. CRIME NEWS

  • South Mission police are asking for help to identify a repeat vehicle burglary suspect captured on surveillance footage from Saturday—residents with information are urged to call Crime Stoppers at 956-668-8477.  Fox Rio Grande Valley
  • Progreso ISD board president Juan Jose Ramos Jr. was arrested last night for public intoxication and drug possession when officers found cocaine during booking — his SUV repeatedly honked and blocked a sidewalk in a quiet neighborhood — raising community concerns about school leadership.  Fox Rio Grande Valley

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hammerhead flatworms are becoming more common in the area after heavy rains brought them from Cameron County to Mission—experts say these invasive worms hurt soil health by eating good earthworms and may cause skin rashes if touched. Residents are advised to handle any sightings carefully and report them to the Texas Invasive Species Institute.  ValleyCentral.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Four South Texas mayors met during a panel at the 2025 South Texas Summit in San Antonio and discussed opportunities for coordinated growth in the region. The panel included mayors (Brownsville’s John Cowen Jr, McAllen’s Javier Villalobos, Harlingen’s Norma Sepulveda) and (San Antonio’s Ron Nirenberg).  Rio Grande Guardian
  • The USDA announced a new $8.5M facility in South Texas to stop the New World screw worm from harming cattle and raising beef prices. Officials said the facility will use genetic modification to release millions of sterile insects weekly—working with Mexican authorities to improve surveillance and prevent the pest from spreading.  Fox Rio Grande Valley
  • City leaders dedicated the $1.5 million Northwest Blueline Regional Detention Facility on June 16 to improve stormwater drainage and reduce flooding in McAllen. The new facility, which holds about 97,000 cubic yards of runoff, is the final project of 18 approved by voters in 2018—officials say upgrades have cut past flood damage from about 800 homes to fewer than 100 during heavy rain.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Today, local emergency management leaders met at the Knapp Medical Center Conference Center in Weslaco (with representatives from the National Weather Service, Red Cross, and Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez) to plan new strategies for better response to severe weather; officials reviewed current protocols and shared ideas to improve communication and boost community safety during future storms.  Fox Rio Grande Valley

  • STHS Edinburg added a new Da Vinci 5 Robotic Surgical System to its fleet on June 16 to improve patient care in minimally invasive surgeries—after team training, the system was fully operational by June 19 and now joins its two da Vinci Xi units.  Rio Grande Guardian
