COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Village in the Valley is raising $50,000 to place a marble monument at Restlawn Cemetery, a historic Black cemetery in Edinburg, to replace a torn plywood sign and permanently engrave names in stone. The non-profit hopes the monument will be complete within a year (located along US Highway 281 near Richardson and Jasmine Roads) after beginning fundraising in June.  KRGV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A pre-dawn blaze damaged 88 Motors in Weslaco—firefighters responded quickly as investigators looked into exposed wiring and a malfunctioning air conditioner.  Fox Rio Grande Valley

CRIME NEWS

  • A three-month-old died after being found unresponsive in a locked vehicle in rural Mission when deputies responded at 3:48 p.m. Saturday to Mission Regional Hospital—medical personnel confirmed the death and the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office is actively investigating the incident.  KRGV
  • On June 27th, Texas DPS arrested Mexican national Jesus Yair Hernandez Rojas and Eviel De Jesus Zamudio in Cameron County after a high-speed chase on I-69 that ended with a PIT maneuver, the men fleeing on foot and officers turning over three undocumented migrants to U.S. Border Patrol.  KRGV

  • Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez launched his re-election campaign at Club Nautique in Mission on June 26th, urging the region to join forces with neighboring counties and Mexico to boost jobs and education. He said local leaders must unite for a smart labor plan—vital for competing globally.  Rio Grande Guardian

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Ivan Melendez from Hidalgo County Health Authority warned that car temperatures can quickly rise to between 130 and 170 degrees—posing deadly risks for children, as about 37 U.S. child deaths occur each year from hot car incidents. He noted that in just 10 minutes, temperatures can jump 20 degrees, urging parents to never leave children unattended in parked vehicles.  KRGV
