  • Local business owners in the Valley said Fourth of July sales boosted revenue as some shops earned over 80% of their annual sales during the holiday. Several owners stayed open to serve last-minute shoppers and offered discounts + their efforts helped increase local spending, with fireworks lighting up Ebony Hills Golf Course at 10 p.m.  ValleyCentral.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Law enforcement in the Rio Grande Valley warned drivers to plan sober rides for this Fourth of July weekend after 14 DUI alcohol-related crashes occurred last year in the Pharr District and stressed strict No Refusal policies in Hidalgo & Cameron Counties.  KRGV
  • Cameron County officials warned South Padre Island beachgoers to take precautions during the Fourth of July holiday by following flag warnings & supervising children near the water as they monitored changing surf and weather conditions.  KRGV
  • On Thursday, the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Texas’ Senate Bill 4, which would let local police arrest suspected undocumented immigrants, breaks federal law and remains blocked. The three-judge panel said only the federal government can handle immigration enforcement — a power held exclusively for nearly 150 years.  The Texas Tribune
