  • The La Joya Police Department is collecting donations — including nonperishable food, water, and hygiene products — to help those affected by severe flooding in Central Texas, and items can be dropped off at 701 E Expressway 83 for distribution to impacted areas like Kerrville.  ValleyCentral.com

  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized 20 undeclared parrots hidden in a bag during a secondary inspection at the Hidalgo International Bridge on Monday — arresting a 22-year-old woman — while Texas Game Wardens transported the birds to the Gladys Porter Zoo.  ValleyCentral.com
  • Former Progreso school board president Francisco 'Frank' Alanis was sentenced to 12 years and six months in prison for smuggling drugs through Dorothy Thompson Middle School—he admitted to financially backing a drug trafficking operation while in office.  ValleyCentral.com

  • The Gladys Porter Zoo will open the Soaring Eagle Zipline on Thursday, July 10, allowing visitors to glide 130 feet above exhibits with views of animals, greenery, the skyline and Mexico — the attraction is projected to generate about $415,000 annually.   • Joshua Aaron developed ICEBlock to let users quickly report ICE activity with validated addresses, and the app now has over 705,000 users (its usage shows a strong public response) while some Rio Grande Valley residents worry it may keep people indoors and ICE officials say it risks officer safety.
