  • On Wednesday, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers and Driscoll hosted their fifth annual Back to School Expo at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg to supply backpacks, school supplies, and haircuts for South Texas students — free vaccines, sports physicals, and health screenings were also offered.  ValleyCentral.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Former Progreso mayor Gerardo Alaniz was sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison and fined $15,000 for a cocaine trafficking scheme that operated from 2020 to 2022—he will surrender himself by August 22nd to begin serving his sentence.  Fox Rio Grande Valley

CULTURE NEWS

  • At a press conference on Friday, H-E-B announced the return of Noche De Vino—an event that will support student scholarships and local arts—set for Sept. 20 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the McAllen Convention Center.  ValleyCentral.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office awarded 54 $1,000 scholarships to employees and their families on Thursday + the funds came from the Wyatt Ranches Foundation, which has supported the program for five years. Sheriff Eddie Guerra stressed that education is a key benefit for staff and their children.  KRGV

HEALTH NEWS

  • South Texas Health System will host a hiring event for ICU nurses on July 30 from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. at University Draft House Townlake McAllen (100 W. Business 83) to fill open positions at its Edinburg and McAllen locations and to build a team for the soon-to-open Neuro ICU.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • DHR Health Women’s Hospital celebrated its 150,000th baby delivery, marking nearly two decades of maternal care in the Valley. The milestone shows the hospital is the only Level 4 maternal facility and honors the work of its skilled staff — a sign of local trust and commitment.  Fox Rio Grande Valley

  • The Rio Grande Valley Vipers Wheelchair Basketball Team will host an exhibition game against the Corpus Christi Rimz Adaptive Sports Team on July 27 from noon to 3:00 p.m. at the City of Edinburg Parks & Recreation (315 Mark S.
