- ➤ The Weslaco Police Department announced Officer Shayne, its first K9 therapy and emotional support animal, died after his health declined due to a tumor in his abdomen and prostate. The poodle served the department from May 2023 — leaving a lasting impact on the community. KRGV

- ➤ The Rio Grande Valley’s building and design community met last Thursday at Uncle Chops Food Hall in Weslaco for the launch of the first local Institute of Leadership in Capital Projects chapter—bringing together owners, builders, designers, and investors. - ➤ A man was arrested in Brownsville after a police chase on Wednesday when authorities suspected human smuggling; Pedro Lara III (20-year-old driver of a Chevrolet Tahoe) fled near State Highway 4 and Military Highway and was later caught near Austin Road and Kelsey Drive. KRGV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ More than 800 McAllen ISD educators attended the TECHnovate conference on Wednesday to learn how to use artificial intelligence such as Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot for lesson planning and classroom teaching while the district sets up AI detection software for student work. McAllen ISD said students will start school on August 14. KRGV

- ➤ The Texas Senate approved Senate Bill 9 that limits property tax revenue growth for cities and counties with 75,000 residents from 3.5% to 2.5%—the bill now moves to the House where its future is uncertain. The Texas Tribune
- ➤ Manuel Cruz, the LRGVDC executive director, said the federal government’s change in operations has raised questions for some programs—but funding for the Area Agency on Aging is now secure.
