CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Authorities in Edinburg surrendered over 35 dogs - some of which showed skin conditions - from a Peter Street residence after a complaint of strong odor, and Animal Control is working to remove them as the homeowner may be facing medical issues. KRGV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ After a South Texas farm worker was wrongfully deported following a traffic stop, he was allowed back with an ankle monitor and must attend regular check-ins while his daughter helps the family navigate tighter immigration rules. The family lost his income and now lives with fear of another detainment (their daily life has changed significantly). KRGV
- ➤ A federal appeals court ruled that those fleeing persecution can apply for asylum—though the government may still deny claims—prompting uncertainty for the nearly empty Humanitarian Respite Center in downtown McAllen, which is managed by Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley. Norma Pimentel, the executive director, said she is hopeful that the ruling will benefit families who need protection. KRGV
- ➤ Congressman Vicente Gonzalez spoke at the NINOS Head Start conference at South Padre Island Convention Center on Thursday—he detailed his securing of $20 million in funding back in July and reiterated his opposition to proposed cuts. KRGV
