- ➤ Camp McAllen is a new 20-acre outdoor park now open Tuesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. that offers catch-and-release fishing, kayaking, hiking and biking trails, camping, an archery range, screened shelters, fire pits, a group gazebo, and family restrooms at 8701 N. 23rd Street just north of Frontera Road. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Alton resident Jesus Bernal, convicted in a 2023 case for fatally attacking Roman Andres Mesa, has his sentencing delayed— the court will reconvene tomorrow while co-defendant Amy Villanueva is set to go on trial next month. Fox Rio Grande Valley
- ➤ Joel Americo Garza Jr., 51, from McAllen was arrested for trafficking illegal modems after a joint buy-bust operation by Spectrum and the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office seized over 50 modems, five laptops and other devices—more arrests are expected as the investigation continues. KRGV
- ➤ A former Edinburg councilman Jorge Coach Salinas pleaded guilty to a federal bribery charge for accepting bribes from June 2019 to March 2020 in exchange for votes on a contract and will be sentenced on November 5 while remaining out on a $50,000 bond. KRGV

- ➤ Mercedes ISD consolidated its schools yesterday to improve efficiency amid declining enrollment by merging Harrell and Chacon middle schools and repurposing Harrell Elementary into a program center—new bus routes, staffing changes and coordinated police support helped ensure a smooth start to the school year. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A narrow bridge on Rooth Road near Edinburg is being widened to cut the risk of accidents after three local schools increased traffic; construction began two weeks ago and will finish in October as engineers plan to bury the irrigation canal. Water service will be interrupted for five to seven days on two occasions during the project — prompting care in water delivery planning. KRGV
