ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 19-year-old rider lost control of his bike—driving at unsafe speed—and hit a light pole on Trinidad Lane near Alton on Saturday at around 5:30 p.m.; he was taken to Mission Regional Medical Center where he died, and the crash remains under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety.  KRGV

CRIME NEWS

  • Mayor Villalobos said he is taking extra steps to improve safety in McAllen after a suspect was caught for assaulting a police officer downtown — the police are gathering details and urging witnesses to come forward amid plans for more security measures.  Fox Rio Grande Valley
  • Two suspects—Sergio Contreras Sandoval and Alexander Andree Flores—were arrested after an officer was assaulted while breaking up a fight near South 17th Street and Beaumont Avenue around 2 a.m. on Sunday and were arraigned on Monday as they face multiple charges while in custody at Hidalgo County Jail.  KRGV
  • Federal authorities arrested 78 people on immigration-related charges in the Valley as part of Operation Pick-Off— a multi-agency effort that began on August 22 and has led to court appearances in McAllen and Brownsville.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Javier Villalobos said he is working with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission to study raising the bar age from 18 to 21 in downtown McAllen after two teenagers were arrested for assaulting a police officer early Sunday near South 17th Street and Beaumont Avenue—a workshop on the proposed change is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 29 at noon at City Hall.  KRGV

  • South Texas Health Systems hosted its third annual Baby Bump and Beyond Expo at McAllen Hospital last weekend—drawing pregnant women, new parents, and health professionals to workshops on pregnancy, infant care and mental health.  Fox Rio Grande Valley
