Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 27th of August.
Good morning, McAllen.
🚨 Crime
A 17-year-old confessed to punching a female police officer in downtown McAllen Sunday at around 2 a.m. near South 17th Street and Beaumont Avenue—he admitted the assault to investigators and now faces a $250,000 bond while 18-year-old Sergio Contreras Sandoval was arrested for interfering with public duties.
Angel Reyes Soliz, 83, was found unresponsive in a vacant lot in rural Edinburg Friday shortly after 7 p.m.—deputies say he was pronounced dead after hospitalization and they are seeking help to locate his family from the La Blanca community so he can receive a proper burial.
🎓 Education
UTRGV ranked second in Washington Monthly’s Best Hispanic-Serving Institutions league table—compiled with Excelencia in Education—and is ranked seventh nationally and first in Texas in the College Guide Rankings.
School leaders said the ranking reflects their commitment to providing low-cost, accessible education that meets local needs.
🌲 Environment
The Department of Homeland Security waived key protections under the Endangered Species Act and other laws on Tuesday to speed up border wall construction through the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge—an important habitat for endangered ocelots and other species.
Conservation advocates warned that the wall may harm wildlife and disrupt a natural corridor built since 1979.
🏥 Health
The Rio Grande Valley still struggles to get good transportation and healthy food, Dr. Rashmi Chandran said, and she will host Accelerator 2025: The State of Health at the Harlingen Convention Center on September 4.
Community leaders + local partners will gather to plan actions that improve neighborhood health.
