CRIME NEWS

  • Modesta Vela, a Roma woman, was arrested on Sept. 4th for election fraud—she allegedly filled in and mailed a ballot belonging to a woman over 65 on Oct. 15th, 2022 during the November 2022 general election and is no longer in custody.  KRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UTRGV has set up its first endowed chair in orthopedic surgery in honor of Dr. Subram Krishnan to help bring top doctors to our community. President Guy Bailey said the move will boost education and patient care in the Valley—providing lasting access to quality treatment.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Local columnist Mario Reyna argues that better education can help end poverty in the region, noting Census Bureau facts that show higher earnings for those with a diploma than those without. He calls on local schools and community colleges to boost programs like High School Dropout Recovery—ensuring every neighbor has a chance to build a brighter future.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Valeria Regalado Ramos, a senior at Sharyland High School, is named Student of the Week for her strong interest in science and leadership in competitive STEM programs — she also participates in UIL academics, student council, and leads her physics and engineering club while planning to earn an associate’s degree and pursue chemical engineering. Her research on recycled plastics to fight bacteria shows the promise of her big dreams for the future.  KRGV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge dismissed an environmental lawsuit that claimed the FAA failed to assess the impacts of SpaceX’s rocket program after a Starship explosion in BocaChica in 2023—environmental groups had raised concerns over local wildlife habitats. The judge ruled that the FAA’s review of the assessment was reasonable and left its license decision intact.  The Texas Tribune
  • A federal judge dismissed a suit filed by groups like the Center for Biological Diversity and the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe that said the FAA did not study the harm from SpaceX's rocket test launch in April 2023 at Boca Chica—finding that the agency’s review was enough.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tejano musician Bobby Pulido announced his bid for Texas’ 15th Congressional District—he will challenge Rep. Monica De La Cruz in the 2026 election. He said high costs and tough immigration rules hurt South Texas and he plans to bring change to communities including McAllen.  The Texas Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Claire Raphael—leading the Mayo Clinic study—found that a sudden tear in a heart artery called SCAD is causing heart attacks in young adults, mostly in women without common risks. The study shows SCAD is nearly six times more common in women and warns doctors to act quickly if chest pain occurs.  Fox Rio Grande Valley
