ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a fatal crash that occurred Sunday morning near Mile 4 W — Mile 12 N in Weslaco, where one person died as officials work to gather more details.  ValleyCentral.com

CRIME NEWS

  • The Texas Department of Public Safety is asking for help to find the driver of a dark passenger car that fled the scene on Sunday at 6 a.m. on Mile 4 West Road north of Mile 12½ Road North in Weslaco after hitting and killing 27-year-old Cassandra I. Hernandez—who was walking southbound.  KRGV
  • The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office said a 20-year-old Hispanic man was found dead inside a vehicle in rural Donna on Sunday around 3 p.m.—one person was detained for questioning—as deputies investigate the shooting.  KRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Valley View ISD has partnered with UTSA for the third year to let students earn a Minor in Spanish while finishing their high school diploma. A recent graduation ceremony confirmed the program’s benefits as officials noted students may attend UTSA after earning the minor — a clear pathway to higher education — reinforcing the longstanding tie between the schools.  Rio Grande Guardian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Sen. Juan Hinojosa filed Senate Bill 2949 to close fuel depots in border counties that are used for smuggling and tax fraud—posing safety risks for local communities. The bill passed unanimously in the Senate last April and is now in the House—aiming to tighten fuel oversight near the border.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Jaime R. Longoria, director of Hidalgo County’s Community Service Agency, warned that the federal budget proposal would nearly eliminate his agency’s programs that help low-income residents—he noted that nearly all of its funding comes from federal sources and that county officials have passed resolutions urging Congress to maintain key programs.  Rio Grande Guardian
